Texans Insider and Lead Writer
The Houston Texans drafted Stanford quarterback Davis Mills with
their first pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected in the third round with the
67th overall pick, Mills won't be leaving his Cardinal ties far behind.
This offseason, the
Texans added Pep Hamilton as their passing game coordinator and quarterback
coach. Hamilton, who was on staff with current head coach David Shaw, coached
three years at Stanford (2010-12), serving as wide receivers
coach in 2010 and two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach
(2011-12).
After he was drafted by the Texans, Mills received a phone call
from his new position coach.
"I'm extremely
excited to get out there and meet him," Mills said Friday night. "He
actually just called me before I hopped on this phone call, so he'll be great.
And I'm very excited to get out there and get to know him and start playing
under him."
Hamilton also coached
Stanford alum and 2012 No. 1 overall selection Andrew Luck at the collegiate
level and during his tenure as offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis
Colts (2013-15).
Mills played four seasons at Stanford
(2017-2020). After a redshirt freshman year in 2017 and playing in just one
game the following season, Mills took over for injured starter K.J. Costello in
2019. In 14 career games for Stanford, he was 287-of-438 for 3,468 yards,
completing 66 percent of passes and scoring 18 touchdowns. He also rushed for
86 yards on 63 carries for three rushing scores.
