Raiders re-signing linebacker Will Compton

Just a day after being released, linebacker Will Compton is back with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Compton announced his return to the team via his Twitter account Thursday night.

I’m back. #year9,” Compton wrote.

Compton was released by the Raiders on Wednesday after appearing in one game with the team last month. Following his one game played, Compton had his mother suddenly pass away and a stint on the COVID-19 list.

Compton left the team on good terms saying he’d do anything for interim head coach Rich Bisaccia. Now he gets to return to the roster ahead of what is effectively a play-in game between the Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers this Sunday night.

Already in the Lineup, Compton Back on Active Roster

David Boclair

15 hours ago (December 1, 2020)

NASHVILLE – It is likely there were not many practice squad players who started for their NFL teams in recent days. But there was at least one.

Will Compton – playing in place of the injured Jayon Brown – was part of the Tennessee Titans’ first-team defense in Sunday’s 45-26 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

It was his first start of the season and likely the last he will make as a member of the practice squad. The Titans re-signed Compton to the active roster Tuesday. The expectation is that, with Brown on injured reserve, he will remain the starter for the rest of the season.

He played each of the last two games as a gameday addition to the active roster, an option given to teams this year to help them deal with issues related to COVID-19. Under league rules, that move requires the player is automatically returned to the practice squad the next day.

“I don't know if it's made for better football,” coach Mike Vrabel said when asked about the ability to use practice squad players in games. “I think it's allowed us to operate the roster and move guys around when you need some pieces with dealing with injuries that occur and dealing with time lost due to COVID.”

Compton has been one of those players.

The eighth-year veteran had been on the practice squad since Oct. 27, a day after he was released from the active roster. Signed late in training camp, he had played in five of the first six contests before he was waived.

In all, he has spent seven weeks on the active roster and five on the practice squad.

In seven appearances, Compton has been credited with seven tackles as well as two special teams stops. Tennessee is 6-1 in the games he has played.

Will Compton Helps Lead Tennessee To Victory

SEP 15, 2020 @ 4:40AM

(Bonne Terre) North County graduate and former Regional Radio Dream Team performer Will Compton was a big part of the Tennessee Titans win last night in NFL football action.

Compton recorded three combined tackles and assisted on two others in the Titans 16-14 season opening win over the Denver Broncos.

Next up for Compton and the Titans is a matchup Sunday against Jacksonville.

Titans' Mike Vrabel talks Isaiah Wilson's development, Will Compton's return, Vic Beasley

Mike Moraitis

The Tennessee Titans hit the practice field for their 10th full-squad session of training camp on Friday after taking a day off to address social justice issues in wake of the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Afterwards, head coach Mike Vrabel did his normal presser with the media and touched on a number of topics, including rookie offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson’s development, inside linebacker Will Compton’s return, and he gave his latest non-answer to a question about outside linebacker Vic Beasley.

Here’s a look at everything Vrabel had to say about those topics when speaking to the media on Friday afternoon.

On Will Compton's return

George Walker IV / Tennessean.com

Compton was one of two familiar faces the Titans brought back in recent days, with the other being running back Jeremy McNichols. Both players made their 2020 camp debuts on Friday.

As far as the former is concerned, Vrabel likes the intelligence and energy Compton brings to the team.

The role Vrabel is talking about will likely be on special teams, but Compton will also be vying for the No. 4 spot on the depth chart behind Jayon Brown, Rashaan Evans and David Long with Nick Dzubnar.

Compton’s return is bad news for UDFA Cale Garrett, who was once thought to be a possibility to make the roster. Barring the Titans carrying a sixth inside linebacker, which is unlikely, Garrett is looking like a cut. However, he’d likely end up on the practice squad if another team doesn’t grab him.

Tennessee Titans: What Will Compton can bring to the team on the field

By Chris Clark

 -

Just days after the sad news of the Tennessee Titans waiving Cole McDonald, news broke that they are bringing in fan favorite linebacker Will Compton for a tryout. Yes, you read that correctly: “The BOY” Will Compton.

If you aren’t a Tennessee Titans fan, you may be wondering who Compton is. Well, let me tell you. Compton became a Titans sensation in 2018 after he joined the team via Free Agency. He was brought in by Washington, as an undrafted free agent, in 2013. He has played seven seasons, five in Washington.

Compton is mostly known for his role as a co-host on the popular podcast based in Nashville, Bussin’ With The Boys, with Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan. If you’ve ever heard the saying, “FOR THE BOYS,” he and Lewan started that famous mantra that’s used occasionally by the Titans social media accounts, and a lot by Tennessee Titans fans.

Even though Compton is a fan favorite off the field because of his relatable personality, he is productive on the field as well. When he played in Tennessee in 2018, he had 16 tackles playing as more of a role player. With the Raiders, where he played a more prominent role, he racked up 41 tackles after joining the team midseason. That productivity is a must for the Titans defense.

The Tennessee Titans inside linebackers are young, and are led by Jayon Brown and Rashaan Evans. After those guys, there aren’t many notable names that can make a consistent impact. Compton would provide much-needed depth and experience, especially in a season with no preseason.

It is also notable that Compton played under head coach Mike Vrabel before, and during his short stint with the Raiders he was given the green dot, which allows him to communicate directly with the defensive coordinator during games to make adjustments. That is a representation of his knowledge on defense as a player, and already having experience with the Titans makes him that much more valuable.

Compton doesn’t just add value to the defense, though, but also from a special teams standpoint. Around half of Compton’s 16 tackles in 2018 with the Titans came on special teams. Titans General Manager Jon Robinson and Mike Vrabel have consistently raved about how important special teams is during their tenures in Tennessee. Robinson loves picking up players that can play dual roles in both offense/defense and special teams.

But, aside from all the on the field experience he brings, the Tennessee Titans should bring Compton in simply because he is a Titan at heart. When the Titans faced the Raiders in 2019, Compton ended up with a loss on the field, but a win for his wardrobe as he was gifted seven jerseys during jersey swaps with his former teammates.

We will see if he is signed after his tryout, but adding Will Compton wouldn’t hurt the Tennessee Titans at all. He is a respected player within the locker room, and a beloved player among the fan base. This move seems like a no-brainer.

Raiders injury report for Denver? Initially encouraging – Jacobs, Mullen could play – The Reporter

 -

ALAMEDA – Josh Jacobs could face the Denver Broncos on Sunday, Raiders coach Jon Gruden said Monday. Trayvon Mullen also, even after the terrifying sequence of the rookie corner that went on a stretcher in a 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.
The same goes for the slot machine Lamarcus Joyner, who left the Chargers game with a calf injury. Left guard Richie Incognito, who missed the game because of an ankle injury, is questionable and potentially available.
None of these things is a certainty, but it was a rather encouraging initial report from Gruden at his weekly press conference while the Raiders visit the Denver Broncos on Sunday in a game that could have postseason ramifications.
Most likely, the Raiders enter the game thinking they have a chance. Without entering each permutation, there is a way they would not, but all that would be needed is for New England (12-3) to beat Miami (3-12) for the Raiders' hopes of being alive despite a record of 7-8.
Then, three things must happen to give the Raiders the No. 6 seed with a record of 8-8: Houston (10-5) beating Tennessee (8-8), Baltimore (13-2) beating Pittsburgh (8 -7) and Indianapolis (7-8) beating Jacksonville (5-10). Those games will be held simultaneously with the Raiders-Broncos game at 1:25 p.m. (PST)
However, Gruden does not plan to base decisions on who plays and who is not based on the possibility of reaching the postseason.
"We are going to play with the best players we have available and we will try to win the game," Gruden said, "We don't have enough bodies to rest the players." We will try to win the game despite the circumstances. "
Jacobs retired from the Chargers game after a shoulder injury (he says he is fractured) worsened after playing against Jacksonville. He has lost two of the last three games. DeAndre Washington (23 carries, 85 yards) stepped forward in his absence, as did Jalen Richard, who had five carries for 11 yards, but also a 10-yard catch in the fourth and 2 after returning from an injury in the ankle at the beginning of the game.
Mullen, who was injured in a collision with teammate Curtis Riley, went on a cervical table and was tied, similar to former Raider Gareon Conley in Week 1 against the Broncos. Conley played next week. Mullen could too.
"I received very good news about Trayvon Mullen," Gruden said. "There is a possibility that I can play this week."
Denzelle Good replaced Incognito, who was at the facility last week, occasionally wearing a protective boot but always under his own power and without a serious limp.
Gruden promises to wear blinders on the last Sunday of the regular season with respect to other results.
"You cannot control what is happening. We have many young players playing," Gruden said. "We've been saying that from the beginning… If we can get help, it will be great. It would be great."
Vacations week
There was no practice or access to the media with the players, their schedule changed during the Christmas week. The Raiders will have their initial tour on Tuesday, which is usually a day off. Players will be excused on Christmas Day, then resume practice on Thursdays and Fridays.
Raiders linebacker Will Compton (51) knocks down the Chargers Hunter Henry.
THE GREAT DAY OF COMPTON
In his second game as a full-time linebacker instead of Tahir Whitehead, Will Compton had 12 tackles, seven more than any other, and left an even greater impression with Gruden with his presence on the field.
"I went out to the field to see one of our players and he took my case for not smiling, not having a good time," Gruden said. "He's a weird guy, man. He loves football. That's why he fits in here. But he really made some plays and hit a position where we really needed him."
Since joining the Raiders on October 30, Compton played a part-time role in six games before becoming a defensive caller and playing every hit against Jacksonville. He played all 61 snapshots against the Chargers.
WASHINGTON GOES UP
With 23 carries of 85 yards, his highest career, Washington intervened without problems for Jacobs and has become so reliable in terms of assignments that he played in front for a kickback team in a hurry.
"We went out to start the last quarter, we didn't have enough players for the return kickoff team, so we threw it forward," Gruden said. "He just knows football, and that is the kind of players that allow us, I think, to win a game like we did yesterday, because at a difficult time, we can ask him to do several things well and he did it."
The carries reached the record of his career – Washington later said he was ready for more – and the yard was second after the 99 yards in 12 carries he had on Christmas Eve against the Indianapolis Colts.
"He was injured last year on the training ground, so we never met him as close as we did this summer," Gruden said. "When you're near him, you see a guy who is really professional. He knows how to block, he knows exactly what to do and he can do it inside and out. He doesn't make mistakes. He can run a variety of routes. He feels comfortable. in a backless formation, he feels comfortable behind the fullback and can run from a displaced position on the shotgun. "
Raiders quarterback Derek Carr had 26 of 30 passes against the Chargers.
CARR EVALUATION
Quarterback Derek Carr completed 86.7 percent of his passes (26 of 30) against the Chargers, his third time over 80 percent this season. He is currently completing 71.1 percent of his passes (332 to 467), but has fed on unsubstantiated stories that indicate that Gruden might be looking to replace him or put him into competition with a rookie when the club moves to Las Vegas.
Gruden said moving parts around Carr this season have not made it more difficult in terms of evaluating his game in the future.
"It's not difficult. We spend a lot of time together," Gruden said. "He has done many good things. I know there are many remote reports out there. But Derek has done a great job. He has done a great job for us. "
SHARPE BACK TO THE RIGHT TACKLE
David Sharpe is back as the starting right tackle after replacing Brandon Parker in the second quarter against the Chargers.
Sharpe started against Green Bay on October 20 instead of Trent Brown, who had an ankle injury, and played a lot against Detroit. When Brown was injured again, however, Sharpe was suffering a calf injury and Parker was approved to replace Brown after a pectoral injury that ended the season. Parker started against Tennessee and Jacksonville.
"We asked him to be a tight end when he entered the game to give us a different look in the game of play and action passes and in the running game," Gruden said. "He is not a great road runner yet. Brandon Parker had problems, we made a change and now the ball is in Sharpe's corner. We plan to start Sharpe. He deserves it."
Gruden was joking about the route, by the way. Sharpe is 6 feet 5 and 330 pounds.

Week 16 AFC West superlatives: Only the good get presents in their stocking

@willosgood116

Robert Hanashiro-USA TODAY Sports

For the first time in what seems like forever, the AFC West had a great week. Week 16 of the NFL slate provided (almost) only positive moments for the teams in the division.
And since it’s Christmas, there’s no reason to bring any negativity to the table anyway.
Here are the AFC West superlatives:
Defensive Player of the week
Will Compton was outstanding for the Raiders on Sunday. Gruden elicited much praise for his middle linebacker on Monday. “I think he had 12 or 13 tackles. He’s got the green dot. So he’s the one communicating with [Paul Guenther]. He’s checking us out of blitzes into coverage, or vice-versa.”
Apparently, it was also Compton who chided Gruden for not smiling when the head coach came onto the field to check on one of the many injured Raiders players.

Officially, Compton had 10 solo tackles and was credited with two assists. That’s a lot of tackles for a linebacker playing against an offense which mostly threw the football.
He played every snap, helping an otherwise inexperienced defense with a bevy of moving parts, solidify itself against the savvy veteran Philip Rivers.
His addition has been a big reason the Raiders’ defense has shown improvement over the course of the season. Hence, why the team is mathematically still in playoff contention headed into Week 17.
